Trattoria Contadina - More Great Meals

On Chowhound's & our concierge's rec's, stopped here at 9:15 2 Monday nights ago (1800 Mason & Union, North Beach). Were seated immediately w/out resvs (I've heard they seat up to 9:30). Efficient, fast service. Not super-atmospheric, but not bad either. Had a very tough time deciding with the huge menu - only surprise was limited Italian white wines on list.

Excellent warm fresh bread with delicious olive oil dropped off immediately. I had polenta with Fungi for a starter - this plus a small salad would be a meal in itself - creamy polenta with assiago & fontina, tons of mixed mushrooms in a demi glace sauce - I am still dreaming of this dish 2 weeks later and had to exert major control to not finish it all & save room for entree. Husband had caprese salad - underdressed, but huge slices of soft mozzarella & tomatoes, with side greens. Much improved with the addition of olive oil & salt & pepper. Entree - veal in a lemon cream sauce with sauteed rabe & penne pasta - very tasy - swimming in sauce, but I wasn't complaining! Husband had linguine vongole - fresh clams, good, but sauce could have used a little (wine) kick even tho we ordered w/ extra garlic.

Still, a wonderful reasonable meal & just what we were in the mood for - thanks, Chowhounds!
