Now you know I like my tortas at Tacos Lupitas. But today I was craving a little comfort and found myself in Union Square for an early lunch. I've always liked their rellenos, enchilladas and tacos, and they are really Mexican from Mexico so that's a plus. But I'd not tried the torta there. Bottom line: It's great. Probably even bigger than Lupita's heavy sandwich, on a long french baguette, toasted in the oven. They then layer on their excellent refried beans, cheese, choice of meat (I had the carnitas which they crisped up on the stove before stuffing the torta) pico de gallo and jalapenos. The only thing missing is the avocado chunks that Lupitas uses, and that's a bummer. I thought the description on the board included guac but maybe not. There is also a little crema on there. It's a buck more than Lupita's ($4.99) but it's also probably half again the size of theirs. I'd be hard pressed to name my favorite, although the missing avo might be the clincher, plus the carne asada at Lupitas is great. The owner confirmed that they will be expanding into the Irish Eyes space sometime in the new year. Yay for us!
