Toronto Portuguese -- Churrasco of St. Clair Takeout only

Churrasco of St Clair is one of Toronto's Portuguese takout places that serve Portuguese BBQ Chicken (and a few other items). It is a few storefronts east of Christie on St Clair. There is absolutely no seating in this place. We went on a Friday around 6:30. There was a line and it took about ten minutes to get in and out. The staff were fast, but busy. I expect that we chose a rather inopportune time to go. We also didn't order ahead, something that they recommend.

We were buying for five adults so rather than go with one of the five combos or "family meals" we decided to go à la carte. They have both BBQ chicken (8.49) and grilled chicken (8.99). We got one whole of each which the chopped up for us. They have three hot sides available in three sizes. We went with large versions of the roasted potatoes (6.75) and the steam rice with (green) peas (4.95) plus a mixed green salad (4.50). They had a few items that sounded interesting that needed to be ordered ahead like Ribs (45 minutes), Rabbit (3 hours), & Suckling Pig (3 days & $139!)

The chicken was pretty good stuff. The BBQ was was juicy and well spiced, but not really hot. The charcoal grilled tasted good, but it was a little drier than we would have liked. They give you a piri-piri-like hot sauce on the side that will spice it up if you like heat. The potatoes were really good--new potatoes cooked in some type of spice that made them turn a reddish colour. The rice and peas were what you would expect from plain rice and green peas. The garden salad was just iceberg lettuce with some chopped veggies.

The amount that we ordered worked out for the five of us. We had a wing, a bit of rice and a lot of the salad left over. Overall a good meal. I would pickup chicken from Churrasco of St. Clair again, especially to see whether the dryness of the grilled chicken was a fluke. This place has always been well-regarded so I am hoping that this is the case. I will however skip the salad and make one at home.

I really love this type of food. If you have a favourite churrasco place or a lead, please post it. Takeout or sit-down, I will try anything. Toronto has some of the best Portuguese food outside of Portugal and I want to find more of it.
