Tokyo - Lunch at Shinya Hanten

Andy P. | Feb 9, 2001 11:57 PM

I've just returned from an outstanding lunch at Shinya Hanten (on Deb H.'s recommendation). Deb, you are a very, very good person. I had the xaio long bao, and fried rice. The xaio long bao truly are orgasmic!! My mouth is so happy right now. Ah, the slightly doughy wrapper, the meat filling, the broth, the joy.

I struck up a conversation with the Chinese gentleman running the place, and when he found out that I was there based on a recommendation from a U.S. food website, he was just beside himself. A very helpful guy. He asked if I'd ever had xaio long bao before, and upon learning that I hadn't, he showed me how he prefers to eat them (fresh ginger on top, with a drop of shoyu, and a splash of vinegar). He wasn't shy about proclaiming these as the best he's ever had, and I have absolutely no reason to contradict him.

Of the 12 or so tables in the place, all but one had an order of these being shared by the customers.

I'm really looking forward to turning my friends onto this place.

And, another plus: The menu is in English!

For directions on finding the place, please see the link below. The directions are great, and the place is very easy to find. The front door of the restaurant says, (in English) "New Asia".

Thank you so, so much.
