Toasting Peeps

I toasted a couple of marshmallow snowman peeps over the flame of the stove. They had a nice crisp candy coating on the outside, like a creme brulee, and real gooey on the inside. The only problem was about 30 min. after eating them I had tremendous stomach pain. Are there any chemicals in peeps that might become toxic once heated? If not, I'll do it again, since I really enjoyed them!
