Tim's Rendezvous - Buffalo, New York

Jambalaya | Jan 9, 200202:02 PM

I spent the Christmas holiday in Buffalo and before the 7 feet of snow fell had dinner at a place which fits the chowhound definition to a "T". Its on Niagara St., near where Pennsylvania St. crosses it. I am told the place used to be called just, "The Rendezvous" and the story goes the mob guys used to take their mistresses there. The boothes all have high backs, the lighting in the back room was kept real low, so it was very discreet.

Its just a dumpy old bar now with only a small cubicle for a kitchen, but they do a really great job. They have what they call cajun food, but its not the most authentic. I have been traveling to New Orleans for the last 20 years and know the real thing. The food is good however and that's what counts. The gumbo is the best dish I had, it really had a bit of a kick and tasted definitely of file. The fried leaks are really interesting and are the must order appetizer. The Jambalaya was too tomato based for my taste, but good anyway. The poboys and muffalettas also good. They do a salmon poboy that is quite unique. The service is slow and this is definitely not a coat and tie place, but if you are ever in Western New York check it out.
