I thought I wanted to go to Charlie Trotter...do I?

Back in 2000 on a business trip I dined alone at Charlie Trotter and TRU. Loved them both. Going back for pleasure in July with my husband, I planned to take him to Charlie Trotter rather than TRU, mainly because of Trotter's fame.

Scanning the board, I don't see many recs for Trotter. What gives?

I see a whole bunch of drooling on Alinea. Based on what I've read in the food mags, I had assumed the restaurant would be all show and no go. Apparently not. Will my husband be hungry if we get the 8 course menu? (I'm starting to get weary of long, drawn-out tasting menu ordeals). Are jackets required for men? If I do go to CT, will the two evenings be too similar, i.e. several hours of formal food-worshiping?

Assuming that I choose CT, TRU, or Alinea for one meal, what would you recommend with a more casual feel and simpler food for the second night? Possibly Italian? It's near impossible to find good Italian in our area, so we crave it.

Any other random thoughts on what I might want to eat for lunch appreciated as well.
