are thin ventilation hoods as effective as traditional "funnel" shaped?

We're re-doing our kitchen and I'm searching for an effective 36" island ventilation hood for over a 30" induction range. I like the looks of the thin contemporary models, but are they less effective than the bigger funnel-shaped hoods?

For example, Miele's only 36" island hood is flat/contemporary, and so is Gaggenau's, as well as Futura Futura's, etc. Assuming equal cfm, would these be as effective as a traditional shaped hood, such as Vent-a-Hood?

In fact, there's not too many funnel-shaped 36" island hoods to choose from.

Anyone recommend a very effective 36" island hood (any shape)?

I just don't want to spend a lot of money and then find that it doesn't work well.

Thank you!
