Thamee, New Burmese on H St, NE - Report

Thamee is a veritable hotspot featuring craft cocktails and a small menu, across from the Atlas. But how does the food measure up? After all, longtime Chowhound favorite Myanmar remains foremost in my heart and mind.

I started off with my favorite dish at Myanmar, the ginger salad. I've had this and enjoyed it at five different Burmese restaurants, and maybe (just maybe) I would not be disappointed in this version if this was my first time trying this dish. But this came out as a dry, shredded slaw and can't hold a candle to any other version I've had, let alone a great version.

Another disappointemnt was the balachaung, a condiment. At Myanmar, you can see what it is made of: dried fermented shrimp, chili peppers, and garlic chips. Here, it looks like a substrate you'd buy for a terrarium. You can't really tell it's food: it is dry and pebbly and wimpy.

The two curries we tried measure up to Myanmar, theough curries at Myanmar are so simple and homey that they don't register at all as 'restaurant food.' Also, I didn't realize that both curries we ordered would have a tomato base.

The biggest problem is that you don't get much of a sense of Burmese food. The menu is so limited as to pigeon-hole you. Still, there is a whole fish and there are some soups and fritters on the menu to make a balanced meal if you so choose. I might go back, but I won't be in a rush and I'm more likely to go back to Stable, the very good Swiss auberge on the same block.
