I had been a regular at Thai Plate but stopped when I moved out of the area. (New Zealand is out of their delivery zone). I had recommended Thai Plate highly as a Chowfind. Anyway, I went to the Friday (only day) lunch buffet last week for the first time in a year. The cooking has changed a bit, but to my farang tastes, I like it even better. Indeed, I thought it was delicious and superb and had to stop myself from gorging at the trough. A huge bargain: a $25 meal for $8.95.
The reality is that 95% of us would be unable to handle authentic Thai cooking. It is just to powerful. Too much chili, fish paste, vinegar`, oil, sugar, coconut milk etc.-albeit beautifully balanced. So what we get here is "westernized", and most often by Chinese cook-owners who don't understand the cuisine enough to play with it . At Thai Plate the chef-owners are Thai. In the past year they have evolved the cooking. The cooking is brighter and lighter but still full of delicious exotic flavours, complex and harmonious. The compromise is on weight, not on talent. So its not authentic, but so what. If you want your food cooked authentically, just ask. The chef-owners say that they will cook for you as they cook for themselves.
Yeah, I know. Even sex with your own wife is great after a year without.
