Thai Luang is an idiosyncratic Thai place tucked away into an odd location. Difficult to see at night (the sign is not lit), and Google Maps sent me the wrong way, through a business park.
From the menu, they are clearly proud of their crispy boneless duck, and they offer it in many forms. They also tout 'homemade' dumplings and a crushed peanut sauce. A few other menu items would be difficult to spot on other area Thai menus.
I couldn't resist going for the duck with basil leaves. I added the spicy corn cakes (I haven't seen this elsewhere) as an appetizer and also got the snapper with shredded ginger.
The corn cakes were excellent. The snapper came out as batter dipped chunks - this was a surprise- and were rubbery. The sauce was a success but the fish was a fail.
The crispy duck was individual pieces, quite fatty (I am not complaining), and I can see why they encourage customers to order this. It was very good. My memories of the crispy duck at Ruan Thai in Wheaton are still pretty strong, though, so I have to say this was not the best version I've had.
The spice level on the main dishes was good, did not need more, but was not exactly Thai hot either.
I would definitely consider going back since the menu is intriguing and provides an antidote to what is normally available around NoVa.
