Thai House Express report

Robert Lauriston | Jan 5, 2005 11:48 AM

Tried Thai House Express (901 Larkin at Geary in SF) last night after reading a number of posts on it here. Best Thai food I've had in a restaurant in a long time.

We ordered several specials. Best was minced duck with chile, mint, and lemon dressing, which turned out to be one of those warm salads you scoop up with cabbage leaves. The duck was crunchy, I guess from lots of crispy skin, never had anything like it before. Thai noodles with crab meat was sort of a variation on pad thai, really good, makes me eager to try their regular pad thai. Fried squid was fine, the dipping sauce was exceptionally good, usually I find sweet-and-sour sauces cloying but this was really tart and worked well with the crunchy, tender squid.

From the regular menu we got the papaya salad with salted crab (tasty but since the crab is just inedible shell I'd get the other version in the future) and two desserts. The Thai pancake was bland, crunchy, sticky-sweet with sweetened condensed milk, wouldn't order it again. Sticky rice with custard which was lovely, great coconut flavor.

I'm really looking forward to eating my way through the menu. I joked to the owner that he should open a restaurant in Berkeley, he said a friend of his runs a good place called Asian Noodle (?) at 12th & International Blvd. in Oakland.
