Texas Chili Parlor, Austin

Greg Spence | May 21, 2002 03:34 PM

Went to the Texas Chili Parlor last night for the first time in probably 15 years. The good news is that I haven't been missing much.

The food, other than the chili, was very pedestrian. Burgers and Tex-Mex were passable but certainly aren't going to win any prizes. Margs were better than average (to my taste) but stay away from the one they make with mezcal.

The chili was the sad story. Nothing but heat and meat here. None of the nuances that one finds in the interplay between different chiles, cumin, garlic, etc. that is essential to the skillfully prepared bowl o' red. Just flat, two dimensional heat and meat. A poor rendition of the state dish in sight of the capitol. They ought to be ashamed.
