A Terrific Meal at Tablespoon

I'd had two less-than-wonderful experiences at the old Spoon restaurant (Polk Street between Green and Vallejo in the city) so I'd been reluctant to try the new incarnation, Tablespoon, despite the fact that I live nearby. Big mistake!

I had dinner there last night and the meal was superb. I started with an interesting and tasty crab salad but the star of the evening was unquestionably the rack of lamb - extraordinarily tender but with plenty of true lamb flavor and a sauce that was both rich and delicate at the same time - wonderful!

Desserts were also good. While the blackberry hazelnut crème brulee bore little relationship to true crème brulee, it was delicious all the same as was the homemade peach ice cream.

One other note: the original Spoon had perhaps the worst wine list I'd ever seen. Tablespoon is just the opposite: a broad (but not overwhelming) selection of interesting wines at pretty fair prices and some nice by the glass selections. I had the '02 Patassy "Green Valley" Pinot Noir which was great.
