Tandoor Indian - it ain't no Sultan

David De Silva | Aug 9, 2002 11:54 PM

Stopped in to Tandoor (40th St. in University City) for dinner tonight with my daughter after hearing some excellent Latin-jazz at the art museum. I was in the mood for Indian food and, after the beating Sultan recently took in a posting, wanted to see how it compares with similar restaurants.

My daughter had her favorite, chicken tikka masala (which I unashamedly admit to also liking) and I had the buffet so I could sample a lot of different things. The buffet had things like makhani chicken, lamb pishawry, fish curry, mulligatawny soup, aloo mutter, etc. Our conclusion was this, while the food was cheap ($8.99 for the buffet) and fairly good (the soup and aloo mutter were pretty bad though), IMHO it surely was not nearly as good as Sultan.

The quality of ingredients and the resulting flavor of the dishes paled in comparison with Sultan. Next, I want to try Kahurajo and Shivnanda, both of which I have heard great things about.
