Tamales and side trip to Tacos Baja Ensenada

Well, took today off to do the Tamales in East LA.

Lillianas has been very highly regarded on the board. Tried the chile rojo and chile verde con puerco. Both are good but not great. The masa is on the dry side. the sauce did not percolade extensively thru the tamales.

Then tried Sandra and Lolitas tamales. Their chicken chile rojo is a dynamite. The masa is great and you can taste the robust chile rojo. Their pork chile verde is equally outstanding. The dulce tamal con pina had some kind of interesting spice which was quite visible and had large chunks which were difficult to chew, I didn't enjoy it as much.

Tried La Mascota on a prior trip. I remember the chile verde con puerco tamale was great too. I didn't like the chile rojo tamale as much. But the pina tamal was great here.

Overall, I think Sandra and Lolitas and La Mascota beat out Lillianas.

side note. Tacos Baja Ensenada is across the street from Sandras and Lolitas. People are right on about Wednesday quality. Since Wednesday is $1 day for fish tacos. They PRE make tons. It is not as tasty as the freshly made ones. Unless you catch them making a fresh batch, the $1 fish taco on Wednesdays is not worth it.

That's all folks for today.
