Initially I was planning on going to Nozawa. But the one thing that came through all the reviews was that the fish wasn't good enough to outweigh the negatives.
I've done plenty of sushi in LTokyo and West LA, so I wanted to try out Fish Row in Studio City.
I called and got a reservation at the sushi bar. Luckily, we were placed directly in front of Katsu and ordered the $50 omakase.
The food was great, interesting appetizer and a really good tuna soup baked with a pastry over the top of the bowl.
The sushi highlight for me was the scallop and the dungeness crab. Toro was just about the fattiest tuna belly I've ever seen and it melted in my mouth unlike any other toro I've had. I'm not usually an uni fan, but this was great. The topper was the blue crab hand roll at the end. Even though we were stuffed, it was great.
Katsu was friendly, but not over talkative. A pleasure to watch. The staff was also very friendly and efficient. We met a nice couple also out on a date who raved about the place.
The only negative was the girl on the other side of us who whipped out her cell phone and had a long conversation with someone right in my ear. At one point she even shushed her boyfriend for being too loud when she was "on the phone!!!" (!) I would have liked NozawaNazi at that point...
In any event, I highly recommend Tama.
