Taco Temple in Morro Bay has been one of Chowhound's favorite destinations on the Central Coast, judging from the 150+ mentions on this site. It changed hands a couple years ago, and expanded to a second location in San Luis Obispo too. I'd first tried it in 2011 when it did not live up to the reputation, but a return visit a year later won redemption and fealty to the temple.

In the area again in July, I went for early dinner along with a friend. I'm happy to say that the Morro Bay original doesn't seem to have missed a beat in the kitchen or in friendly service through the changes. With a designated driver, I could indulge in a frosty Michelada. My friend was overjoyed to see pineapple Ace Cider on the drinks list, her favorite flavor. We tasted all the complimentary salsas with warm tortilla chips from the self-serve bar while we waited for our orders.

The very fresh local king salmon taco, $18.95, and a local CA halibut taco, $19.95, were big enough to share and still not polish off in a single sitting. The blackened rub and mango salsa complimented both well and the fish were seared to the perfect doneness.

It was hard to choose from the housemade dessert list. Ultimately we landed on Tres leches cake to end, $7. This was actually Cinco leches with whipped Creme fraiche frosting and dulce de leche adding to the milk count. Then our wonderful waitress brought out a complimentary side car of unsweetened whipped cream after I quizzed her about the milks used here. So I guess that’s Seis (6) Leches cake!

I was so impressed by the quality and price value of the baking, I stopped by again a few days later on my return leg from Southern California to buy more. I got the Killer carrot cake, $7, that's on the chunky side with classic, rich cream cheese frosting and Oreo cheesecake, $7. A worthy detour off 101, for sure.

Please tell us about your experiences here.
