recent discussion on this site has me curious about spice history, beyond my grade school version of world-explorers-in-search-of-spice.
I'm looking for reading recommendations, hoping there is a Kurlansky** of the spice trade who writes from a point of view that includes culinary interest. It could be technical or novelistic . . . really hoping to find something meaty and readable that has the politics and the kitchen wrapped into one!
Maybe it's in the long introduction of a cookbook, I don't know . . . TIA!
