Chikurin japanese restaurant is new in Rego Park, and is at 97-09 64th ave. 718 896-2900.
We walked past it last nighta nd saw the opening specials of $1 sushi and $2.50 rolls ($2 lunchtime.) That is usually enough to scare me off (Bargain sushi, yick) but the place was packed (on a thursday night) and looks alright.
The food was actually very good. As good as Micky's (a couple fo blocks away), believe it or not. They must be tryign to hook people since they just opened and then will up the prices.
Yes, Micky's does have an incredibly skilled traditional Sushi chef (but I am talking about freshness and taste.) And Micky's does have great service and comp appetizers.
Anyway, the special of the day of a oyster roll with warm fried oysters was great. The salmon, spicy tuna, and tuna rolls were very good. I also had a piece od Spanish maekeral sushi (but have had better.) My friend loved the salmon sashimi. Also, I liked the wasabi and ginger they use. I may have that much eperience with sushi, but this sure didn't taste like bargain sushi,
Let me know what you think.
