On page A1 of today's Wall Street Journal there is an article reminding us that it is about to be "surstomming season" in Sweden. This "fermented Baltic herring [is] known popularly as 'rotten herring' for the noxious stench of the canned fish". "[I]t is [because of the odor] considered impolite to open a can of the ... fish indoors." One Swedish fan puts plastic bags on her hands when opening cans of surstromming to avoid getting any on her skin. The Swedes consume about 550 tons of the stuff every year, traditionally beginning on the third Thursday in August. Anyone know where we can get some around here? I doubt if they have it at IKEA.
