Grew up nearby and continue to be amazed by how diverse this dull town is, Lebanese and Greeks really run the show. Lots of little surprises, like that, can be found in the food scene too.
If you happen to be in town, or passing through, there are lots of small and large delights. . .
There is only one reason to go to this, one of the city's most popular restaurants - during the height of Presidential Primary season it's Backroom is a packed room - and that is the Fresh Fruit orange or lemon. Not the Freeze. The Fresh Fruit. The kids who work there will roll their eyes because it is hard work. You'll see them squeeze three or four of the fruits, add sugar syrup and carbonated water. Banal sounding, but there's something blissful there.
The Red Arrow Diner
The real deal. You simply cannot go wrong. The pies rival those of the midwest. And imagine, burgers on buns, english muffins or toast.
A discreet little corner place on the Northwest corner of some cross street - green trim and plate glass. Lebanese pita sandwiches on Bridge Street with a secret sauce that one would only expect to find in the South.
Great greek, as the name suggests. And a cool real people crowd too. The prices will blow your mind.
New on Elm Street is an Italian place that is shocking to find. It recalls Atwell's Avenue in Providence RI for authenticity. Classic cuisine, nothing chi chi but extraordinarily well executed - Caesar tossed at table, a little silly and showy but at least there is a payoff.
I haven't tried the new ethnics crowding the street that the Puritan sits on, mostly in mini malls, but look forward to trying them.
