Returning home to NM from NC after Christmas, I found a very pleasant surprise in Roland, OK. Roland is one of the first exits on I-40 coming from Arkansas. Approx. .5 miles south of the Interstate there is a strip mall on the left hand side of the road, and in that strip mall is the Cuban Grill. What a pleasure, and how the hell these people washed up in Roland, OK I'll never know. Food is priced resonably, $6-9 range. If you've ever eaten in the local places in Miami, you know Cuban food is not fancy but good basic meat and starch. Whoever is in the kitchen in this place has a very deft hand, perfectly fried yuca and croquetas, a "papa rellena", kind of a bastard child of a very light German potato dumpling and a tamale, and a few other starchy sides. I had a lovely marinated and grilled pork chop, good "real" meat, not plasticky like most Interstate steak house fare. I was the only customer at that time (c. 3:30-4 pm, granted, not the peak dining hour.) They have been open 2 months and business is appearently "just ok". (the english spoken there is "just ok" as well, that's about all I was able to ask.) Nice, bright, clean atmosphere and fun music on the stereo too. This is a good place and a big change from what's available along the interstate, so if you're in the neighborhood you should give these people a try and support them! This place is not too far from Ft. Smith and Fayetteville AR, and I can see people from OKC driving by Roland in the course of travelling somewhere, so it's a good stop off for anyone from that neck of the woods as well.
