Surf City Grill-a review

hbgrrl | May 28, 200511:33 AM

Mr. HB and I were done with cocktails and needing something lighter to eat, since it was already getting late.

The kids, hearing our conversation, suggested Surf City Grill, located in a inconspicuous strip mall in South Huntington, at Bushard and Hamilton.
Because they're teens, they know good, plentiful food.

We put on our flip-flops and went to try it.

The place is very small, only 2 or 3 tables, plus a little bar area to sit. They have menus at the ordering 'window', that looks into a large kitchen. Wish they had more seating, and a little less matter, our order were taken and we sat outside at one of the two little tables.

We ordered the Sampler plate to try a bit of everything.

We weren't disappointed.

Our plate was piled high with sticky jasmine rice, topped with fresh, stir fried veggies. There were two skewers. One with chunks of tender beef, grilled perfectly, and a skewer of chicken, grilled. On the rest of the jasmine rice was a pile (and yes I mean a pile) of shredded 'kalua' pork that was melt in your mouth tender. We couldn't believe all the food.
It also came with 2 sauces: one peanut (o.k., not enough punch) and a slightly sweet, spicy chile sauce (really great with the rice). The big surprise was a little cup of chile dusted peanuts, raisins and coconuts, to put in the rice. I waited until I was nearly done, then mixed it in to 'try'. I wasn't disappointed. Although I didn't love the toasted coconut, it was different, and a welcome change.

The owner, Gaby and her husband, Randy came out to check on us often, and were so enthusiastic and warm. We ended up talking to Gaby for a while after we were done.

We'll definitely be back to try their other dishes.
