I was cruising home from having tried some new taco trucks in El Sereno. They were fine, nothing worth noting here. I came to a screeching halt when I saw a small stand with an al pastor wheel set up at the corner of Avenue 26 and Humboldt - just a bit east (or is it south?) of the 110 Fwy on Avenue 26, between the freeway and Pasadena St.
It was fantastic, if not the very best, one of the very best al pastor tacos I have ever had. It had both a deep, complex citrus and chilies flavor, as well as a smokiness that you don't often find in al pastor. The meat was perfectly charred, and still moist and juicy and tender. The tacquero garnished my plate with a baby potato that had been roasting in the meat juices on the colmao (I think that's what the slightly domed grill is, but I'm not sure) - and even the potato was fantastic.
The fixin's were great, too: a superb salsa rojo, a good garlicky tomatillo salsa, a thin avocado salsa, a perfectly fresh salsa fresca and something I've never seen before - a salsa made of pickled red onions, herbs and habanero peppers which was extraordinary. Then there were the usual chopped radishes, onions, cilantro and limes.
I don't know what nights or times they are there. I was there around 7:20 - my friend wanted an early evening - and it looked like they had just recently set up.
