Last week I stopped by Sunny's Donuts in Ukiah, a Cambodian-owned, 24-hour donut shop. I asked for recs from the engaging proprietress and bought two of those suggestions. She comped on a handful of donut holes as a first-timer so I could try the raised glazed style. Unfortunately these were kind of metallic with a bitter aftertaste.
The most popular item, Blueberry fritter, does not have any actual blueberries. Those squared-off dots are cubes of dehydrated apple stained purple-blue. Yet the fritter was well-made with a nice crispness to the exterior and nice loft for soft fluffy texture contrast.
Best of the lot turned out to be the crumb-coated cake donut. Unlike any cake donut I've had before, in that it has larger dimensions, but probably about the same amount of material. And the texture was unique too . . . extremely airy and tender like sponge cake with a bouncy give.
When I was last in town two 4 years ago to meet the folks at the soup kitchen, I stopped at Honey Fluff donuts. The donut holes filled with custard or homemade jam were very memorable. Though this spot, Sunny's, seems to be more popular, I prefer Honey Fluff Donuts. https://www.chowhound.com/post/honey-...
