you could probably put rubber gloves on some of Sullivan Street Bakery's excellent, crusty flauto and have a thoroughly enjoyable sandwich. However, they've opted to top it with hard-boiled eggs, fresh mozzarella, artichokes, and a ramp and anchovy vinaigrette for the perfect spring lunch.
inspired to pop in after reading about this taste sensation in New York mag and at the Nosher's nycnosh.com, I was not disappointed. the bread was perfect and the combo of the eggs, mozzarella, and artichokes is just wonderful. The vinaigrette brought it all together, with just enough of a salty tang to season the rest of the ingredients, but not fishy enough to put off my anchovy-hating co-workers. I doubt it’s going to be around for too long, since ramp season is so short lived, so I highly recommend gettin’ while the gettin’ is good.
One co-worker chose the Cubano instead, and kept making the sort of embarrassing moan-y noises you don’t want your co-workers to hear you making. I’d comment on that too, but she was far too possessive of it and wouldn’t let me have a bite (which wasn’t the worst thing in the world, since that meant I didn’t have to share my egg/mozzarella/artichoke/ramp delight).
