Had dinner at Sugiyama last night. We went off the menu and set a food budget of $150 per person. Food selected by a commbination of Mr and Mrs. Sugiyama and head waiter. We had four people. We started with a large portion of the monk fish liver pate served with some sort of unusual "soup" on the side that included lotus seeds. Next was a course of mixed fish cakes, a great shrimp, small deep fried crab and the best edmame I've ever had. Then came the sashmi, with real gold leaf (????). First class in every way, as good as any of I have had in NYC. Imported from Japan red snapper, yellowtail, medium fatty tuna, squid (best I've ever had) and great uni, plus an oyster. Next was deomestic Kobe beef with mushrooms, cook it on your own piece of hot iron. Then a course of sliced duck served with whole small eggplant with miso sauce. Next course was half a deep fried soft shell crab, about the best I have ever had. Then came miso soup with pickles and a fancy rice dish (steamed in a leaf). Dessert was his usual grapefruit jelly, which I love. I'm thinking that I can't remember one more early course. It may come to me later. Everything was very good to great. Portions are not large but with this many courses, more than enough to eat. A great value I think for $150 a person. This is about the 5th time I've eaten at Sugiyama. Much, much better than Nobu in my opinion. Sugiyama is small, chef owned family place. Drinks wre two good bottles of medium priced sake, about $50 each for a 720ML bottle. With tax and top, the total tab was around $900 for four. Can't do this every day....
