Stock and a Cabbage

So I have this quart of homemade chicken stock, and a medium cabbage head, and I want to make a really hearty soup for Tuesday. But I'm not in the mood for kielbasa or ham or sausage. Any suggestions from cabbage loving chowhounds? I adored my mother's old-fashioned borscht, what she called cabbage borscht (I'm not sure there were any beets at all in it, there was definitely meat. As these things happen, I never got her recipe). If anyone does an interesting cabbage soup with or without meat I'd appreciate a recipe. I'm fresh out of inspiration.
