I am hugely fortunate to have both the best fishmonger in town ( arguably in the country ) and the best butcher I have ever used within striking distance of both my home and work. Since both were complaining to me how tough business was at the weekend, I hope it is not considered a shill for me to recommend them on this board and to urge all chowhounds in the North London area to use them or lose them.

Both are on the Essex Raod just down from the Angel and both are superb.

Steve Hatt, sells the freshest fish I have ever had in London, everything from Dover Sole to John Dory to the plumpest Halibut. Also great shell fish and seafood ( they had some wonderous looking razors in on Saturday but didn't fit what I was cooking ) The people who work there are knowledgeable and helpful. Keep your nose peeled for the tell tale smoke which means they are preparing their own haddock and kippers.

James Elliot is next door and supply the best organic meat I have ever had. Nothing is too much trouble for him and he has the best smoked Lincolnshire bacon ever.

As I said, suppliers like this are a treasure which is fast disappearing. They say you get the food you deserve so what does it say about us that these two guys are finding it so tough?
