Stanton Social - I just have to vent...

GRRR...please tell me if you think that I was being 'unreasonable'...

my friend and I are planning a b-day party for someone at Stanton Social. We called them about four weeks ago to make a reservation for 25-30 people but we were told that they would have to call us back to let us know. They never did - so we had to call them back 4 times to finally have someone confirm that we could actually reserve the place. We also asked at that time about menu's, bar situation, etc. but were told that one option was that we could just order the food and drinks that night which was fine with us.

fast forward to a week ago. I wanted to get a birthday cake but knowing that some restaurants don't like food from the 'outside' I asked if this would be ok. The answer from Peter Cain (owner) was that 'it was fine to bring a cake'. So I went ahead to order the cake.

fast forward to today. I get an e-mail from my friend who said that the restaurant just called her to confirm the reservation and to let her know that there would be a $7/plate charge for the birthday cake!!! I completely freaked out...even if we only served 10 people that would still be $70 in addition to what we already paid for the cake! I've never heard of something so outrageous! First of all they should have let us know that they would prefer us to order from them, second of all $7/plate?!? isn't that a bit ridiculous? And it's not like we are only going there to just to eat a birthday cake...

I asked to speak to the owner (Peter, again) - who was absolutely the rudest person I have ever talked to. He basically told me that it was restaurant policy and that he was already extending us the 'courtesy' of allowing us to reserve the lounge on a friday night!!! WHAT KIND OF ATTITUDE IS THIS?!? He could have refused us a month ago, we certainly wouldn't have been begging to be going! I was completely speechless! Then he said that well since we are 30 people he could give us a 'discount' on this cake charge to $5/plate...at that point it was getting a bit ridiculous...I told him that we were prepared to be spending a minimum of $500 on food alone...not including what we would be spending on alcohol/drinks and he wants to quibble about a cake charge? which he never told us about a week ago when we had asked? finally he said in a very rude tone 'fine just bring the cake' and he will make sure they waive the charge, he also added that he was a very busy person and that he didn't have the time to talk about this!

I was/still am completely shocked by this outright rude attitude! Are we not bringing business to his restaurant...is it a courtesy of the restaurant to take your reservation?!? GRRRR....

I had very high hopes for this restaurant but right now I would like nothing more than to just cancel the whole thing...unfortunately the event is tonight so there's no way to change plans...grrr...I will be keeping my fingers crossed that things will go much smoother tonight or else I have a feeling you will be hearing from me again!
