New in Stamford - International Roti

cteats | Apr 15, 2003 10:46 AM

Tried the new International Roti on West Main St. this past weekend. It is next door to Rolando's, just West of the intersection with Stillwater.

They offer West Indian Roti. These are large pancakes made of flour and chickpeas (I think) wrapped around a stew of potatoes and chickpeas, with one of about a dozen meat or vegetable fillings added. It is folded up sort of like a burrito.

The fillings include curry chicken, stew chicken, beef, goat, shrimp, conch and vegetables. We tried the stew chicken and the beef. They also have fillings called buss-up-shut and phoulorie, whatever they are. They cost from $4 to $7.

Beyond the wraps, they have patties (beef & chicken) and fresh juices (which they hadn't started making yet when we went on Sunday). These are also mysterious, including things called peanut punch, mauby, pumkin punch and irish moss.

I'm new to Roti, but I can't imagine they get much better than these. The stews are very flavorful and well-spiced, and the roti skins have an excellent texture. They are also very filling. A great addition to a fast improving neighborhood!

BTW, anyone else see the signs on Rte. 1 on the East side of town for a Middle Eastern takeout? Claims to be opening soon.
