Stainless steel pots and pans.

Hi
I recently received a stainless steel set of pots and pans as a gift, and almost immediately when they were put on the heat, black spots started popping up all over the pans. I scrubbed them off with some baking soda, but I'm almost scared to use them again until I figure out how to stop it. I've been trying to look it up, and it seems like I need to season them with oil. Does that work ok? And do I need to do it to the pots as well as the pans? I know when I lived at home still we had saladmaster pans and they never did this. I'm just curious as to what to do. If anyone has advice let me know please!
