that header will do either of two things. What the hell is he talking about ???(to some), and grab the attention of others, just out of curiosity. Family celebration for my youngest son's birthday (20) at Bay Ave last nite. Thought it was weird that I call at 3:30 and could still score a reservation at 6pm. Tourists gone? It's October and the cocooning begins? or the weather? Probably none of the above, but the Captain, or in this case Chef Romanowski is on the disabled list, now recovering from knee surgery (wear and tear of at least 20 years of my patronage) and then some. For those diners prospectively pointing their itinerary to the Highlands, fear not: there was no discernable drop off (for the most part) from the kitchen.
I had to post as I scoop up the last of my Short Rib dinner and could it be even better than what I had last nite???? Birthday son also had the Ribs - wonderfully done & finished with crispy onion frissee, mushrooms, with a potato parsnip side and glazed root vegetables. The only shortfall was my soup, which I never hesitate in ordering at his restaurant. A butternut squash bisque with creme fraiche and a crouton of something I don't remember. It was a bit off, a bit thick, and just missing a bit of Joe's 'soul effort' when it comes to BAT's soup de jour. That's the only shortfall of the evening.
Maggie, our waitress saw to it that we were taken care of. Other servers stopped by, welcoming us back and commenting that the summer must indeed be over - as regulars start to reappear in their little storefront.
My boys split the crab cake appy with mango salsa, and at $15, one would wonder/balk at such a costly 'entry' - but being the size of a burger one would get down the road at Barnacle Bills in Rumson, and full of lump crab meat, it always satisfies and puts a smile after each forkful.
DW had her special salad - she should have a bumper sticker "I break for Joe Romanowski's salads' - as it's always ordered - last nite's special had candied beets and apple with arugula, endive, & radicchio with an almond crusted lightly sauteed goat cheese. She ordered the only special of the evening. Veal medallions, with potato gnocchi and shitaki mushrooms (the medallions were as tender as the Osso Bucco and our Short Ribs). And she's the only one who didn't take a doggy bag home. ;-)
Oldest son had the pork Ossu Buco done marvelously and is such an ample serving (picture Fred Flintsone receiving his brontosaurous side) at the Drive-In (lol) with garlic broccoli rabe & butter beans.
Skipped on dessert as DW had a tiramasu and fresh coffee waiting when we returned to the house. Comfortably at home, dessert enjoyed, and on to the Yankee game.
Godspeed Joe. Get through rehab and looking forward to seeing the Captain back in the galley.
