Finally made it over to JaBoni's in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood the other night. Was REALLY looking forward to a great time and meal, with all of the hubbub I had been hearing and reading.
I was charmed by the parking lot attendant, and thought, good move on the part of the proprietors. However, the place was completely empty and rather cold. The server was a bit too casual with us, waiting ten minutes to come over to the table, engaging in banter at the bar and then way too friendly. The really bad part started when I picked a bottle from the rather slim wine list. It was the best bottle on the list. When it was presented, it was the wrong year. Now, this may not seem to be a big deal to some, but I was perturbed that a) the waiter said she didn't notice and b) then tried to cover herself by saying it was just as good and then finally c) refusing to alter the price in accordance with the actual value of the bottle. It wasn't like she went off and asked someone in charge, she just made the determination there at the table. She did not appear to really know how to open the bottle, let alone make determinations about the change in the quality of the beverage she was serving. Further, the food was served long after being produced - it was cold where it should have been hot. All of this should have been overcome by the food, but it was frankly NOT YUMMY. The mushroom fricassee was downright plasticky. I wouldn't have been shocked to find a piece of the container in it.
I was so disappointed because I was hoping this would be a good alternative to the swanky places in St. Louis - a real chowhound kinda deal. Sorry to lay such a drag on the site, but if you were hoping this would be good, I thought you should know.
