I like pizza. Let's start with that. I am decidedly not a pizza snob. I'll even eat chain pizza. And frozen pizzas, too, some to think of it. However, my preference is for non-tomato-based sauces. I love fresh tomatoes on a pizza, but am ambivalent when it comes to tomato sauce. (Yeah, odd.)
As of late, I'm on a quest for spinach pizza; that is, a pizza with a white sauce or olive oil base, spinach, likely some garlic, and some cheese. I've had several of note, all somewhat different, that I've enjoyed (see below) and am looking for other recommendations. Pasadena-area preferred, but willing to go further afield if necessary.
Spinach Alfredo from Mamma's Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta (http://mammasbrickoven.com/): "Creamy Alfredo sauce, spinach, chicken, bacon, mozzarella" - had them hold the meats and add ricotta and garlic. A really good pizza and probably my favorite in terms of it working as a whole. (From the Pasadena location on Rosemead, just south of Del Mar; other branch is on Fair Oaks in So. Pasadena.)
Spinach Pie from Rose City Pizza (http://www.rosecitypizza.com/): "Homemade New York White Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese, Garlic, and Sauteed Spinach" - this was an odd one, in that the flavors, when they came together, were great. However, the pie wasn't assembled very well and there were dollops of minced garlic and other dollops of some sort of creamy cheese (maybe a ricotta mixed with garlic and herbs - I swear, it almost tasted like Boursin?) on top of the spinach. Sometimes you'd have a perfectly balanced bite, sometimes it was all garlic which overwhelmed the spinach, and sometimes it was the creamy cheese, which was addictingly good but also overwhelmed the other flavors. Located on Rosemead Blvd. in Rosemead (just north of the 10).
Spinach Pizza from Pinocchio's Pizza (http://www.pinocchios-pizza.net/): "With Pizza Sauce, Spinach, Sliced Tomatoes, Mozzarella Cheese, Olive Oil and Feta Cheese" - I missed the "with pizza sauce" part of the description when ordering this; it was okay, and might work better with an olive oil sauce, but I felt that feta cheese was a bit too salty.
Spinach pizzas I want to try:
* Vittoira Pizza in Alhambra (http://vittoriapizza.net/): "w/fresh spinach, garlic, olive oil, capers, mozzarella cheese and spices" - I've no idea how the capers will work, but am curious
* Tarantino's Pizza in Pasadena (http://www.tarantinospasadena.com/) - called the "Florentine" it has "a special blend of sauteed spinach and various imported cheeses.
And on that note, where would you recommend for a spinach pizza?
