Looking for special dinner that isn't "new American"

D-NY | Jan 9, 2004 12:23 AM

I'm taking my boyfriend out for his birthday next month, looking to spend $100-$150 (which generally translates to ~$25 entrees). I was hoping to try a place that serves different food from your standard "new American." (I generally like new American but he just took me to Blue Hill for my birthday and we are going to Grammercy Tavern for a Restaurant Week lunch on his birthday, so we are looking for something different.)

He mentioned Mexican but the top 3 contenders for high-end Mexican -- Maya, Zarela, and Rosa Mexicana -- don't seem to get much raves here. Dissenting voices? I don't care about authenticity for this meal, just deliciousness. Tell me one of these places (or another Mexican place) is fabulous and the perfect place for a birthday dinner!

How about pan-Latino - any high-end places you recommend?

I thought about Danube but that is more than I wanted to spend. Wasn't that impressed with Walse + went there on a business dinner, so the place is ruined for romance for me.

If all else fails we'll go to Lupa which we love, but he really wanted to try something new.

Oh and French is out...

Thanks so much for helping me solve my chow challenge!!
