Speaking of BBQ, Highs and Lows at Rouge

Tried the Mondays in August BBQ sampler with my wife at Rouge last night. I was looking forward to it, since a) I've been to Rouge a few times and enjoyed their Southern offerings, b) I heard Andy Husbands's team placed 10th in a national BBQ contest, and c) I saw the ribs they came up with at a BBQ competition in Acton last weekend. (I could not taste these, as the team was working on the competition but not selling during the hours I was there. But they looked great.)

The BBQ was mostly disappointing but with a nice highlight. All of the items (ribs, chicken wings, pulled pork and beef brisket) were extremely dry, so much so that extra sauce didn't help much. The ribs did not look anything like what I saw at the competition.

This was all-you-can-eat, so I got a second plate of ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were the same, but the pulled pork the second time around was OUTSTANDING!!! Very hot, very fresh, very tender, and moistened (not drowned) with a spicy vinegar sauce. This was probably the best pulled pork I ever had.

Hopefully, the next visit (I'm still a fan of Rouge) will be more like the second plate than the first. I like all of their appetizers and salads, and the service is always casually good.
