we decided on spago for our third anniversary after reading many positive stories. i'm happy to report we were not disappointed.
started w/the hudson valley foie gras four ways. we're big foie gras fans and this was heaven to us: the intense blenheim apricot compote spread on toasted brioche, playing against the terrine, the lush mousse atop a spicy fig tartlet, seared w/anise-spiced fruit, poached w/sour cherries & nectarines. these were the sort of concentrated flavors that just explode & then dissolve like sinking your head into a warm pillow. the insulation of flavorful fat.
feeling silly, the odd flame motif on the lighting fixtures seemed to call out for a bottle of bonny doon cigare volante.
entrees: i had roasted loin of sonoma lamb w/an herb crust over chino farm shell beans & sweet onions. the meat was cooked perfectly, juicy & sweet.
husband had roasted prime cote de boeuf w/pommes aligot. he was amused by how the potatoes in the little silver dish wrapped around the serving spoons like taffy when the server presented it. the flavor was a pure combination of cream, cantal cheese & potatoes. he felt the beef was slightly overdone but still quite good.
dessert:remembering judiau's pointer-thank you, btw-, we ordered the kaiserschmarren w/chino farm strawberries. while we waited for the souffle(20 minutes?), our server presented complimentary cookies to reward us for our patience(the marzipan cubes were the favorite). it was worth the wait for the beautiful golden cloud of sweetness that arrived at our table. the sauce of strawberries was a bit sweet & a bit more tart, but it came together harmoniously.
our server was wonderful, very attentive and helpful. we couldn't have asked for better way to spend those
2 1/2 hours.
