South Phila. Italian Restaurant

Criniti"s Italian restaurant., just one block north of Broad and Oregon at 2601 South Broad St. is my favorite restaurant. Be sure to go on a cold Wednesday night, when they are serving the veal shank special. Call ahead at 215-465-7750. If they have the veal shank special that night be sure to reserve a portion. This is absolutely the besy meat dish I have ever savoured..Two diners could easily share one prtion. It consists of a full pound of veal shank slowly roasted in the oven under heaps of sweet peppers ,tomatoes, onions, celery and carrots. The red sauce(the gravy if you're from the area)
becomes a marvelous combimation of red sauce and veal stock. The tender lumps of veal fall away from the bone and the sauce and vegetables are to die for. The sauce is so good you could throw away the meat and just enjoy the sauce and vegetables. It is a dish and specialty so good you should postpone a visit till it is available. Soup used to be a weak point at Criniti's, but they now have a respectable lentil soup and passable minestrone. The red sauces are a fresh combination of crushed tomastoes and are light and delicate, not heavy and overcooked. For the $25 per person you are likely to spend for a for 4 course meal at Criniti's there is no better value in Philadelphia. I have had meals costing two and thre times as much that haven't been half as good. The staff is generous with their warmth and hospitality and is always at pains to do it "you way" Dinner at Criniti's is like having dinner at your favorite Italian friend's house. It's as good as visiting Grandma., maybe better.
