South Bay Chinese (not Dim Sum)

Erin | Dec 17, 2003 04:23 PM

Haven't seen too many postings lately about what's happening down here...Thought I'd mix it up a little and see what others might think and know about.
Hunan Taste
(No. 4th St., San Jose)
Absolute *favorite* Chinese place. I lived for a brief time in China and this resturant has been the closest to "real" Chinese I've had. No MSG..although I have to say, in China they cook with that stuff...a lot (at least in the town I lived in)!
Steamed dumplings (skip the fried) tender wrappers, tasty filling, pefectly cooked.
Kung Pow chicken *exactly* like I had in China...can't eat it too much any more, too spicy. Getting weak in my old age! ;)
Smoked chicken is also fantastic. They smoke whole chickens on premise and use all the chicken parts.
Sauteed Eggplant...little greasy, but close to what ate in China.
My favorite, is the smoked Hunan Spareribs...didn't eat in it Shantou, but love this spicy black bean garlic sauce over the tender braised short ribs.
One complaint, they don't do seasonal vegetables and the portions are Americanized with too much meat and few vegetables.
Usually a line out the door M-F (open Saturday lunch & dinner) for lunch, quiet at dinner with mostly take-out.
Open kitchen so you can watch Joann and the others cook up a storm.
Family run resturant, kid friendly (they'll bring plain boiled rice or noodles for the kids) AND more importantly, great Chinese food!
While it's my favorite...wouldn't mind trying other authentic Chinese resturants. Love to hear from others south of Milpitas and Mt. View.
:)
