Solid Indian Restaurants near Paddington or major sights along Thames?

Posting for some friends here. They have an overnight layover flying through Heathrow, and they've booked a hotel just east of Paddington Station. They're interested in a place that might show them the British way with Indian food, or South Asian food more generally. They live in Washington, D.C., so it's not like they lack for American options.

They'll have from 3 Friday afternoon until 11 Saturday morning in London, so Friday dinner seems most likely. It's also likely that they might not be near Paddington at that time but instead tramping through Westminster or Soho or the like. Any noteworthy places that are perhaps not Michelin-fancy but well worth a stop?

Thanks in advance.

edit: I'm already aware of Brick Lane, and did enjoy a meal there some ten years ago. I get the sense from reading this board that many hounds don't like the area much for food, and of course it's not exactly located near most tourists spend one evening in London. But suggestions about Brick Lane are, of course, welcome.
