Some of the Skinny on the upcoming social this Sunday 7-21

Here some info for inquiring stomachs...

Hi there fellow tristate and other hounds – hope you are all raring to go (get your forks ready) for the upcoming outborough event this Sunday. Abby is SWAMPED with getting stuff ready for the event as well I sure with her own life stuff (oh – yeah – duh – we all have lives outside of posting and lurking on so I am going to post some of the “skinny on the event” – feel free to jump in with other suggestions and details I may have missed. I just completed this and got bumped off my server so I am redoing on word this time, arrrrr…

FACTS: The Chowhound Social will take place at the Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria. It will take place from 1-5 on Sunday, July 21st.

The Bohemian Beer garden is located at 29-19 24th Ave., between 29th Street and 31st. It is a 5 minute walk from the N train Astoria Blvd stop.

ALL hounds are invited! Lurkers, veteran posters, friends of posters. EVERYONE!

First and foremost, we'll be there to eat and meet.
REMINDER: You can come without bringing anything, but what fun would that be… However, we are asking that each attendee purchase at least one $5 raffle ticket. The proceeds will be going as a donation to our favorite habit of choice – the chowhound site.
SUGGESTION: Please bring along a stack of business cards from the place you are bring food from. It would also be HELPFUL if you made a quicky sign by using a regular piece of paper folded in half (a table tent) with the name of the dish – the general ingredients – and where it is from with name of place and phone number (so when the biz cards run out – people can take notes) and maybe someone will collect the signs at the end (I volunteer) and post the potluck for armchair eaters and others to enjoy (as well as for future reference).
SUGGESTION; As to quantity to bring – what you want and can afford is appropriate. If you figure the dish will feed 5-10 people then you can expand it as a tasting.
REQUEST: Please bring your food item already cut up and ready to go (or bring appropriate utensils – disposable preferably) Keep in mind that this is like a tasting, so portions should be 1-3 bite sized.
If anyone has any extra disposable serving utensils they don’t care about getting back please bring them along. Somehow there are never enough at a pot luck.
REMINDER: The only thing we ask is that you don't bring any drinks. The Beer Garden was kind enough to let us hold our event there and so any beverages should be purchased from them.

If you have any questions about what you should bring, feel free to email
REMINDER: Cash only on the silent auction, etc. so besides the $5 per attendee, bring extra money (because there will be things you will just have to have hopefully at bargain prices).
We've got a lot of very cool things planned for this social. Quite a few hounds have generously donated amazing goods and services that will be auctioned and raffled off on Sunday.
SUGGESTION: There is still time to donate any goods or services to be raffled off or for the silent auction. Please contact Abby regarding this at
REMINDER: We're asking all attendees to purchase at least one $5 raffle ticket, however you are welcome to purchase more to increase your chances of winning. See link below for all the cool stuff we'll have on auction/raffle. If there is no link apologies from Tigerwoman, I am not so good at this stuff but look at Abby’s post on July 10th or 11th on the outerboroughs board and you will find the link there.

SUGGESTION: If you think you'll be coming and haven’t already done so, please post what you'll be bringing. It creates excitement and also there might not be as much duplication (though with the diverse tastes of this group the range should be just amazing.
REQUEST: Abby is looking for folks who would be willing to help man the raffle collection, and oversee the silent auction tables for 15-30 minute shifts. There seem to be a few people who have volunteered to bring forks, plates, napkins, etc. but if anyone has a good source for this that they want to bring – it wouldn’t hurt to have extras – we are expecting quite a large (unknown number) crowd of fork stabbers.

FACT: This is a private, volunteer assisted event. No agency relationship express or implied exists between any parties and Chowhound, Inc. This is not a Chowhound, Inc. sponsored event.
