I have the skinny, or the fat...on Wat Thai

Kitchen Queen | Oct 31, 201311:56 PM

Attached this to an old thread but, wasn't sure if ya'll saw this info so, reposting:

First Sat. of every month, Wat Thai does have food however, it's NOTHING like the ole' days. It's located down the stairs under the school building NOT in the basement of the temple. There's one vendor with cooked and prepared stews and veges only. Most are rather spicy (for me anyway). 4$ for just the stew or vege in a small container or 5$ for 2 items and rice. Next to this vendor is one selling skewers but, they are not satay w/peanut sauce. Across the other side is another vendor selling Thai tea, coffee, sodas and some other items. I found her coffee (1$) way too sweet. There are school lunch tables where you can sit and eat. Up the stairs, I found a temple member selling the coconut rice stuffed w/either banana or taro and wrapped in banana leaf - banana was 4$ taro 2$

ON NOV 2/3, there will be the Loykrathong Festival.
For 10$ entry you can enjoy all things Wat Thai, including food. Otherwise, go on that first Saturday. GO early, say 9A. Food stall is open and you can stay to watch the children playing traditional Thai musical instruments. Wait for the monks to come out of the temple to accept community offerings. If you feel inclined, stand with the others and drop a 1$ in each of the monks buckets (maybe 12-15 monks)

Some years back, the temple did buy the adjacent land (where the gas stations was) with the intention of expanding and having the food again However, it is very costly and there are many restrictions/required permits, etc. that so far have made this move impossible. Anyone out there with a million dollar donation?

Hope this info helps.

P.S. Recently went to the Hollywood Farmers Market and the Thai stall is still there and still serving up yummy morsels!
