My Midwestern mother-in-law wanted a fancy dinner for the extended family for the end of her holiday stay. She picked Skates. We were a group of about 15 ranging from 1 year to 81 years old. I know it's an "old school" restaurant, but I was still surprised by the fact that there wasn't a SINGLE vegetarian entree on the menu. A few salads and cold apps that could've been pieced together, but no substantial, interesting hot dish that would feel on par with the other entrees. Yes, it's a seafood restaurant -- but it has concessions for the beef-only and chicken-only crowds. Why not vegetarians too? My husband had to order plain noodles with cream sauce (found on the kids' menu) and had them add some roasted vegetables to it. Oddly, it was also 1/4 full (at 5 on New Year's Day), yet service was really slow...to the point where the waiters were apologizing for the delay in getting our food. I wonder how much longer it will last.
