SJ Bistro, Downtown

Erin | Apr 16, 200605:49 PM

Naglee Park Garage in downtown San Jose, near SJSU.
Went for dinner Friday night, very casual, intimate dining spot. Just a few tables with the smallest line kitchen (in view)I've ever seen.
A very pleasant and enjoyable dinner! Everything is ala cart and reasonably priced (you order at the counter, and they bring it over). Philosphey seems to be cook seasonal with what's available at the markets...bistro cooking.
We (husband and myself) ordered a variety of sides and one main to share:
Mixed green salad
Cup of soup- Chicken Mullitgany (sp?)
Pan fried Trout
Butternut Squash Gratan (blue cheese topped it)
Chocolate Tart
One Beer- Hoegaarden a white Belgian beer
One glass of wine
Total $35
Food was tasty, overall; I thought the soup could have been seasonsed more strongly (definetly, more salt) as with the fish.
Trout was perfectly cooked, flavorful, simple; flaky and not dried out. Not a big fan of trout so I really can't comment too much.
Salad was fresh, simply and well dressed (olive oil, lemon, etc). Chicken soup was good not great. Squash Gratan was fantastic! That was both our favorite. Great contrasting flavor with the blue cheese, simple...just...yum!
Chocolate tart was more like pudding; which is not a bad thing. Intense chocolate flavor topped with vanilla whipcream. I would have like more of a cookie/shortbread like crust, but that's really personal preference.
I have read in other reviews that the rossitere meats can be hit or miss.
Definetly will be going back for more dinners or lunch, especially as the weather gets nicer and the patio opens up.
If you're in downtown SJ and looking for a simple dinner, think about giving this place a try; I'm interested to see what others thing and how they'll do.
