sietsema spots great fujianese - lucky 117

went to lucky 117 on etheridge the other day, which was recommended in sietsema's 100 best asian restaurant column. everything was absolutely wonderful. the place is a little low end, but it was clean and the staff was attentive, albeit with very limited english.

new years cake with some pork pate thing
(reminded me of a vietnemese sandwich) veggie's and
rice wine? was outstanding. lo mein with scallops
was pan fried noodles with scallions (what did you expect for $3.00?), but was still delicious. Big plates of sea snails and lots of other good stuff were wolfed down at the next table. pork testines [sic] and pickled vegetables were fabulous.
plus lots of interesting stuff on the steam table.

the next table ordered a fish, and somebody ran out to get it and came back with it in a bag - I guess from the fish store owned by the cousins down the street?
I'm often a little leery of seafood at a low end place, but maybe its promising here.

we couldn't figure out how to order the "gooey dumplings" which had been recommended. lots of the menu is on a board in chinese only, so we resorted to pointing at what other people had.

definitely worth a return trip, and more menu exploration.

definitely worth a return trip.
