Shrimp paste with bean oil

rockstop | Jan 3, 2008 06:37 PM

I have a recipe that calls for Thai shrimp paste (blachan). I've never used blachan before, but I thought it was basically just fermented shrimp and salt. At the local Asian market I found a jar of "shrimp paste with bean oil," that has shrimp, garlic, soybean oil, pepper, salt, and paprika listed as ingredients.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the blachan and the "shrimp paste with bean oil?" Can I substitute the stuff I found for blachan in the recipe?

Thanks!
