Don't tell anyone but I secretly think Pierre Herme's cookbooks are overrated. I made the olive oil cake in one and it was vastly inferior to the recipe I was previously using. I made it because it was one of the simple recipes in the book, as well as a few of the other simple recipes but none of them turned out all that impressively (maybe my fault, I don't know). But I don't honestly feel moved and inspired to make the fancy ones he's famous for. Visually and judging by descriptions they just don't really seem as fresh or clever or inspired as everyone makes them out to be. I know, he's god and it's like criticizing Shakespeare (people get mad) but I don't really feel the guy.
