After reading Silence of the Songbirds, and realizing how quickly songbirds' populations are crashing due to habitat destruction, pesticides, skyscrapers, cats, etc, I'm trying to change over to shade grown coffee (preserves their winter habitat since it is akin to growing coffee in a forest). However, it is proving really difficult to find brewed!
Any suggestions? I live in Arlington and work near the White House, which is where I buy most of my coffee. The best I could find is Caribou which sometimes sells some rainforest alliance coffee (which I'm not sure is shade grown.) I once asked the guy to verify that the coffee I was buying was rainforest alliance and he asked me if I worked for them, so I doubt they get many questions like that. I usually buy wonderful non shade grown coffee from an Ethiopian guy in a coffee cart on 18th, and even told him I would subsidize it if he switched to shade grown but we had some language barriers.
I also would be interested in suggestions for local places to buy shade grown coffee for gifts. That, I'm sure will be easier to find.
I also remember hearing a while ago about a coffee shop maybe near U St that started with an S. I think Ethiopian and maybe shade grown.
